I am a 40 yr old single mom of one son. He was diagnosed with ADD when he was in the 5th grade. The reason it took so long is because he isn't hyperactive. He was just struggling in school. I did not want to put him on medication at all! So through the 5th & 6th grade the teachers, counselors, tutors and I had to work so hard for him only to scrape by. After the 6th grade he and I went on vacation together. He asked me to put him on medicine because he just couldn't concentrate. So in July we started the grueling trial and error of medicine. Some made me mean, some he slept all day and some he wouldn't sleep at all, then some made him silent he just wouldn't talk. He is a very sweet boy by nature. We finally got the generic focalin xr. It is like night and day compared to the 6th grade. He made student of the month and his lowest report card grade is 79! But he has lost 15 pounds due to side effects. He only takes it when he goes to school, not on weekends, holidays, and won't take it during the summer. I still hate and feel guilty for having him on it at all. I worry about dependency later in life. Anyway thay is my story. Any words of wisdom to a new medicated child?
