almost 5 years ago I made the biggest mistake of my life that I regret everyday. I signed my rights over to the state for my son. a the time I was in a bad relationship and was also on drugs. I feel I wasn't even in my right state of mind at the time I did this. im not trying to make excuses I just want to know if there is any way possible for me to get my son back. my life is completely turned around and I know that the best place for him to be is with me.

You would be better off contacting a lawyer that specializes in Family Law. They will know exactly what you need to do.
This is an international site so what happens in 1 place is different to the next. It differs from state to state in America and then country to country.

If he was placed for adoption and the adoption is finalized then no there is no way to overturn that. This is to protect the child as the child needs stability and a sense of permanency, as it is not fair for the child to be bounced around from here and there. If the child is still a ward of the state then it might be a possibility. Though, if he is still a ward of the state you have to also realize that he may have been bounced around from one place to another and that this will change who he is. He may have trust issues, attachment issues, etc. There has been 5 years of his life that you have not been apart of. A lot can change in those 5 years, so you will need to learn about who he is now and if you are prepared for that.
