Getting pregnant while breastfeeding...

[deleted account] ( 23 moms have responded )

my daughter is 7 weeks old and my partener and i really want to start trying for another baby...

i know, i know its very quick... but im young (22), fit and healthy and we would really like the kids to be close in age. plus my obbie has given me the go ahead!!

now im not an idiot and i know its not impossiable to fall pregnant while breastfeeding...

what id like to know is how many mums out there have fallen pregnant while breastfeeding? how long did it take you?

also did you notice any physical changes which indicated that you were pregnant BEFORE you took a pregnancy test?

i noticed my breasts got really sensitive and HUGE when i first fell pregnant with my daughter... but i doubt i will notice that this time while i still feeding.

any advice or comments would be most appreciated : )

My 1st son was 5 months when I found out I was pregnant again, I started to proudce massive amounts of milk, sometimes better than 10 ounces in a 15 minute period. My body did not wait till the baby was born. I can't really remember there being normal symptoms, but that was 2 kids ago... hard to remember these things now...

I got pregnant when daughter was 6 months, still breastfeeding, no periods in between. By 2nd trimester my daughter weaned herself completely from the breast as my milk supply had all but dried out by then... almost certain it was due to the pregnancy. You can get pregnant while breastfeeding but usually this is more likely when not exclusively bfeeding ie baby supplementing with formula and/ or solid food and esp after baby turns 6 months the contraceptive qualities of bfeeding are much less. Health risks aside, it is hard work having 2 close together... I worked hard at getting my 1st to be more independent earlier on (ie able to climb stairs by 14 months as long as I walked behind) but you will still have 2 little people fully dependent on you often at exactly the same time and however young, fit and amazing you are you do only have one pair of hands!!

i got prego 3 times while Bfing my son, eric. the first two i had miscarriages (at 12weeks both times). i believe it was do to BFing and body couldn't handle both. the 3rd turned out to be my baby mac.
anyhoo, when i got prego i could not stand to feed eric. my nipples got EXTRA sensitive, it felt like he was sucking them raw. i had morning sickness as well.

Congrats on your baby girl! We weren't trying, but when DD was 8 months old, I started feeling sick (very sore throat/cold symptoms), and one day I sad to DH, "gosh, I haven't felt this way since I found out I was preggo" and we just looked @ eachother in shock! I was BFing full time, about 5 times/day. I took a test and it was positive right away!! Unfortunately, I ended up having a m/c 4 or 5 days later. Another friend of mine had the same thing happen and told me to wean the day of the positive test. I didn't :( I was waiting to see the doc. Good luck!!!

My brother was born when I was only 46 weeks old, and I had 4 more sibs by the time I was 7. (In my neighborhood, this was called Catholic Twins!) He and I were both breastfed, but the babies came so quickly (all singles) that my mom ran out of breasts! (One more when I was 15, just for grace.) My only advice would be to have their births at least a year apart. It was hard for us when my bro and I had to share important B'days for 6 weeks. Today, he is the only sib with more than 3 kids!

I was only able to breast feed my daughter for 3 weeks and got pregnant with my son when she was 9 months old. They are 18 months and 4 days apart. It has been so much fun with them that close together. They get along really well, allthough they still have brother/sister moments of fighting and arguing. Im 26 and my kids are 4 and 5 years old. Something else that I really liked about having them 18 months apart is that we didnt have to buy twice as many diapers. My daughter was potty trained by the time my son was born. :) That was a real blessing. I hope God blesses you with your hopes of having another baby soon. :) I know that He will take care of you, your baby and your body if you have faith in Him.

My first son was 6 months old when I got pregnant. He was breastfeeding all but one bottle a day and I had not gotten my period back. I had problems with the placenta and umbilical cord which MAY have been caused by my kids being so close together. I was not supposed to pick up my older son from 20 weeks on ("anything over 20 pounds") which was so sad for us. It felt terrible thinking it might have been partially my fault having put myself and my baby at risk. Everything turned out alright in the end, but regardless of what your ob says, only you know how you might feel it if you ended up with potentially avoidable complications. I said be as patient as you can!

hi Robin

I got pregnant with all 3 of my girls when I was bf. I notice my milk was drying up and my mood swing had started back up per my husband.

My oldest son was 5 months when I got pregnant the second time. I didn't realize I was pg again until I was almost done with my 1st trimester!!! I had morning sickness/nausea, extreme fatigue, and some weight gain, but I didn't realize why... My sons are 15 months apart and I love how close they are because they play well together now (2 1/2 and 18 months). BUt it's hard... very tiring! But I also have 10 years on you. :) Best of luck to you!

I got pregnant with my 2nd son when my 1st was 15 months old and am again with my 3rd now i was breastfeeding and i didnt have to try i got caught straight away my son was 10 months old having about 3-4 feed a day.... as long as ur OB has given the go ahead i dont any problems having them close in age.....good luck

I breastfed all 5 of my kids to 12 months. I never regained my periods until 6-8 weeks after they were completely weaned. Actually, with my last 2, I never got a period in between. She was conceived with the first ovulation after weaning her older brother. Wanting to have them so close will be a challenge - But conceiving while still nursing may be the bigger hurdle right now.

I don't really have input on this at this time, but it is interesting for me to read b/c I'm thinking of having my second child(that im prego with now) and a third child really close together. My first child will be about 2.5 when my second child is born which is a good age spread, but i would like my second and third to be closer that way all three of them will be close in age. Also, not to sound bad cuz I want all of my children, but at the same time I want to be done sooner with having kids so I can start my career.

lol! I hear you! Coltan was 8 pounds 5 oz. Dj was 7 pounds 2 oz! I was so happy to have smaller baby. 7 pounds is by no means a low birth wieght though. Its about average. That's what I'm hoping for again :)

my partener and i have researched all the complications which can occur from close pregnancys and are still keen to go ahead.

i went full term with my daughter and she was 9.2lb born so a lower birth would kinda be a blessing haha... kidding!!

i also return to work when my daughter is 5 months and will have to ween her off the breast then as i wont have a chance to express.

I fell pregnant when my son was 10 months old. I was still breastfeeding him but as I was working I was also expressing. My husband and I took no precautions after his birth and planned to try for another baby when he was 12 months old. It happened sooner.

I didn't have a period for 9 months after my son's birth and I only had the one before I conceived again.

One way I knew I was pregnant was that my son started to refuse feeds and started to bite while feeding. I also suffer from migranes and the frequency of them increases when I am pregnant. I certainly felt pregnant before I had done the test. I felt slight cramping and bloating.

I became pregnant while I was still bf'ing my daughter, but quickly weaned once we found out we were pregnant. She was about 14 months or so. Unlike my last pregnancy, I didn't have any breast tenderness, had some pretty serious morning sickness for only about 2-3 weeks. I didn't start ovulating again until I was about 8 months pp though, so that might be your only downfall. Good luck to you!

Also, I had c sections with both children and my second pregnancy went pretty well. I was a little uncomfortable at times and it's a little harder when you have a little guys to take care of already but it really isn't bad. I really is great having them close together. I'm due in October and so far this pregnancy isn't going too bad either.

I hope your OB told you that having another baby so quickly (usually 18 months) that it can lead to premature labor and smaller birth weight babies because your body has had NO TIME to recover. You are taking a big risk by getting pg so soon. Just wanted to tell you. - I wish you the best though. I would NEVER want to get pg so quickly but that is just from my experience with a 22 month difference. GOOD LUCK.

I got pregnant while breastfeeding twice. Both times when the baby was 6 months old, both times using birth control. I had not had my period back yet. In fact, I have not had a period since July of 2006, before I got pregnant with my first child. With both pregnancies I noticed that my milk supply was getting harder to keep up with. The breast thing was kind of hard to detect because I was already breastfeeding. Honestly, I didn't know until the morning sickness got so bad that I was like, this isn't normal. I was 7 weeks pregnant with DJ when I found out I was preggo with him and 10 weeks or so pregnant when I found out I was going to have the new baby.

Good luck!

Just be careful! I know someone that is due on her daughters first birthday and hasn't been able to hold her daughter for the past 3 months and now she's on complete bed rest. She can't take care of her 7month old by herself. It's been very hard on her and her family not to mention her daughter. Research the health risks just in case. I'm all for kids close in age, just make sure that if you're put on bed rest at 7month pregnant someone will be around to help you with your baby. Other than that if you still want to get pregnant right away have good luck and have fun!

Hi there, I'm still breastfeeding my 11 month old baby girl and all I want to say is that although yes, you certainly can get pregnant again while breastfeeding, sometimes breastfeeding can delay you getting your period back for a while..... which is fabulous!! but which may mean you might have to be a little patient because you may not be fertile for a while yet. I have only just got my first period after having my baby now, but everyone's different so maybe wait til you have a cycle first, then start trying..... just a thought!! Good luck
