Gifted under achieving son

My son is 14 and a freshman at a top high school. When he was younger he was perfectionistic about grades. Now, he is getting Fs for the first time in his life. I don't know how to help him. Being frustrated and angry hasn't worked

Perfectionism can sometimes be a huge barrier for people. If they can't get something perfect, they don't want to do it at all.

You need to figure out why he has disengaged from school. Talk to him. Talk to his teachers. Talk to the school's guidance counsellor or student services department. Don't worry about the grades. Worry about his inspiration and motivation to learn.

Just because this high school does well in school rankings that doesn't mean that it's a perfect fit for you son. You won't know though until you find out what's caused him to give up on school. Don't be afraid to change schools if it comes to that though. A good match between student and school is what matters.
