Giving your child water

A couple of ounces can be dangerous for a small baby under the wrong circumstances. And like I said, formula has vitamins and minerals and fatty acids, so it is not plain water. I repeat: not plain water. Even a fully grown, perfectly healthy adult can die from water intoxication.

Yes I know all of this however the article said giving your baby a little bit of water is dangerous. I wasn't saying it was funny that your child can get water intoxication. I was saying that is was funny because those of you that use formula use 4 to 6oz of water at a sitting maybe more are just fine right. Also the article said that just giving your baby a little bit couple of ounces is dangerous. Guess I should have put my post more clearly next time.

I agree with prior posters. Water intoxication is not a joke.
Watered down formula is a serious issue, in and of itself, in low income households and less developed nations. It's a major contributor to a lot of "failure to thrive" cases...

Formula is made with water, yes, but it is not plain water. Like celery or watermelon, breast milk and formula have a lot of water as well as valuable nutrients. Too much plain water can lead to water intoxication (which can be fatal), and it can also cause nutritional deficiencies (malnourishment). Because babies are so small, it doesn't take much to 'flood their system' with water so to speak. So basically too much water can potentially poison a baby or cause it to starve to death. Not my idea of funny, but to each their own.

It's too MUCH water that is dangerous and no one can tell you exactly how much would be too much for each particular baby. Formula is designed to be mixed with a specific amount of water. Too much or too little mixed in it can be dangerous. Just like breast milk is 'made' with a lot of water, but there's no way to 'regulate' that amount since it's designed perfectly. No EXTRA water is needed and any extra water has the potential to be dangerous and even fatal.
Water intoxication is definitely not a funny situation.
