My daughter had our first grandchild about a week ago. Everything seems to go weel, or so we thought. She did NOT have an episotomy, nor did she tear her perinium. However, after birthing the placenta, we noticed the doc in a huddle and talking in low voices around the end of the birthing table. They told us she had a grad tear and she would need toheal and that was about it. It seems now, we now such a thing means she tore through muscle, has bounds of stitches and is in terrible pain. They gave her pain pills and a few long pads with icey's to put in them. She is in so much pain, she just cries every time she has to pee and cannot walk without pain either. She is also nursing and that seem to be going well. The baby also poops at least 3 time an hour. She was told it could take up to 3 mths to heal which is dificult while nursing and changing and trying to go to the toilet herself , enduring intolerable pain each time she does. She is taking sitz baths and such, nothing is helping. Her doctore told her this is a recovery worse than a C section. I can't bear to see my daughter, a new mommy in such a horrible painful place. OH, and now her ankles are severly swollen , which she did not have during her pregnancy! Has anyone heard of such a thing as a Grade 3 out of 4 internal muscle tear? Thank!

I didn't have tears through muscle, but I did have Grade 3 tears. Both down and up. It takes time to heal, but she will heal. She'll probably want a gentle stool softener too. That feels like going through labor a 2nd time.... BUT it gets better. Good luck to her and I hope you all enjoy that sweet new baby

I cant help with the tear but you can buy things to help with the pain when going to the toilet. Its an called Ural, it helps get the acid from the urine so it doesnt burn, its an alkalinser (not sure if i spelt that right), it has a lemon kind of flavour and isnt too bad to drink. I really helped me when having to go to the toilet.

My daughter just had a baby and with a grade 3 tear. They gave her stool
softners but she has IBS. They just have not helped and when she finally
does go it is so painful and it has busted stitches. Any advice for IBS would
be greatly appreciated. I am getting her a spray bottle and Ural. I have
never heard of it, what exactly is it? Can you take it if you are nursing?
Can it be purchased at a health food store?
Thanks for ANY advice

Yes, I ripped during delivery & it was no fun!!! I did not have that severe of a rip, but it still hurt. I used a squirt bottle of water everytime I used the restroom to soothe it & I also had a spray that the hospital gave me as well (I don't remember the name of it!) I honestly don't remember how long it took me to heal...probably at least 2 full months or so? I was afraid mine had gotten infected, because it hurt so badly at one point, but it wasn't. These are the kinds of things that people don't tell you about when you have a baby. No one mentioned to me how sore you are after you have the baby! I didn't realize it would be so painful. I'm so sorry your daughter is having to go through that! Bless her heart!! Just tell her to keep it as clean as possible with a squirt bottle, and use stool softeners like others have suggested! Good luck & congrats on your new grandbaby!

i tore from my pisser to my pooper, and it was horrible! i was a week and a half out, and it wasn't getting any better and i went back to the doctor. i had an infection on top of the tear. she might want to get checked for that as well. my tear took at least 3 weeks to heal, but to have sex wasn't going to happen for a while. 10 months later it still hurt during intercourse. stool softeners, and sitz baths, and a squirt bottle to squeeze warm water on the area while i went pee, helped immensely.

It took a week or two before I stopped feeling like my lady bits had been run through a meat grinder. It was still uncomfortable to sit for a while after, but by the time I went for my post partum check at 6 weeks I was better. Didn't let my husband near me, though, for another month! That was just too much....

No worries, not sure where you live so if your in the States it may be called something different, (im in Australia) but still the same thing, it take all the sting and burn out of it. It take about 6 hours to take effect once you first drink it, then you can have 4 a day (i think) but one nurse told me if it was still stinging to drink more, it wouldnt hurt. Hope it helps :)

Thanks for your post! Yes, stool softners are a necessity! It's just so painful for these tears to heal . How long did it take beforeyou were able to walk like you weren't on a horse and for the pain to become managable to the point of being able to function without feeling so terrible?
