My grandson is 9 months and has been diagnosed with allergies to dairy, nuts and has eczema. He is at my house often so I want to make sure we have the right snacks available.

well, I don't have kids with allergies like that, but like I said, we narrowly averted an epipen incident with one of the kids on the soccer team. Had his dad not been on the ball, and showed me the (as I said) VERY fine print...I'd have felt horrible!

And they really don't put it on there where you can see it very easily. I've been a label checker ever since!

The cookbook should be a big help, because it should also have a list of things to avoid, such as certain oils, etc. Sometimes you even need to check with restaurants to see what kind of oils they use, because peanut oil is a very common thing for deep fryers, because it results in a very even, golden color...

Unfortunately, constant vigilance is necessary, and as always, proactive is best!

Thanks Shawn that is really good advice. We know we have a lot to learn. I see my grandson every other day really blessed. It is important that I am proactive also in his food knowledge.

Just remember to read ALL packaging. Often, multiple types of snacks are produced in one facility. I had a kiddo on a soccer team that was allergic to nuts, so we'd get gummi snacks for breaks...only to find out (in the VERY fine print on the package) that the gummi snacks were packaged in a facility that also packaged peanuts.

Otherwise, at 9 months the pediatrician should have some very good suggestions, and as long as you and your kids are on the same page and communicate the child's needs, you'll be fine.

Work with his parents so that you have a list of things that are ok for him to consume.
