Green cloth nappy safe homemade detergant?

I'm wanting to start making my own 'green' laundry detergent, but unsure what to use. I have found recipes that you Borax, but also found that it can cause rashes and only 5mg can be fatal to kids and pets, can cause miscarriages, harm unborn babies and impair fertility, so don't really want to have it in the house.
Anyone know something else?

We use it, but if you don't want to, just omit it from the recipe and boil your cloth diapers, then hang to dry (sun also natural bleach and disinfectant)

Edited to add: I noticed (after) you posting about stains and bleach- bleach is FAR FAR more dangerous to everyone than borax- it's why elementary and nursery schools tend to not use it, even though it does disinfect and remove unslightly stains- you may want to do a little more research on borax before you discount it. I'm not anti chemical, but I am aware of what's in my house and try to keep out the really bad stuff. Try washing soda (not baking soda, though this can be a great tool for your stain busting cabinet as well) and vinegar, cold water, hair spray (for pen stains), shampoo, salt (for blood stains). Make sure you find how to use them so you don't damage your clothes (there are some great sites out there, just google 'natural poop stain remover' or something like that.)
