My daughter is almost one and I have lost at least 1/3 of my hair. When I ask around no one seems to know why. And, will it come back?

Happened to me and to a friend of mine. When you're pregnant, your hair does not fall out...So you're losing hair per se -- you're just shedding what you should have shed when you were pregnant. Problem is, you shed it in chunks! It is a hormonal thing, and you can ask your doctor if it seems abnomal. My friend had to get a new hairstyle, she had bald spots. I suddenly have bangs or fringe where there was none before.

Ok, it has NOTHING to do with breastfeeding. Watch, when you are pregnant, your hair will stop fallling out....or not NEARLY as much. Make sure to take your Vitamins, extra Calcium with D, and eat your bananas. What happens when you are preganant, you don't lose hair. When the baby is born, it starts coming out. It also seems like a ton because it is also shedding old hair it kept, and new hair. Unless you have alopecia, this is compeletly normal to happen. But maybe never expect to have the same hair you had before your babies. That is just ANOTHER thing we sacrifice to have children, along with weight gain, stretch marks, terrible hormones, sleepless nights, bags under our eyes, saggy boobs, and fat asses. Just another "badge"

I always loose hair - but with my first, and even now with my second breastfed daughter - it falls out in mass amounts. I have to unclog the bath drain once a week. It's 100% normal and yes - it will come back. If it starts coming out in chunks, I believe you can see a doctor and get a sort of antibiotic for it (I have a friend who had this... and she said once she started taking the antibiotics, the hair stopped falling out) Don't stress too much :)

I should say it is not strictly related to BFing.....really. It is all about hormones...but BF ing does not make it worse.

Yup...mine too! I know this thread is old...but valid. Once my hair started filling in, I got pregnant with my next. Now I am going through it all over again. Hopefully in another year or 2, I might get my hair back.

Hooray! I will get it back. Thanks for the positive comments. Fortunately, it seems like it's stopped falling out. And, yes, mine was coming out in clumps as well, mostly in the shower. I think the stress of it was the worst part. I just hope some of it comes back before we try for number two!

With my first daughter, I had hair loss throughout my pregnancy, handfuls every time I showered.  Two months after she was born I was pregnant with my son, and the same thing happened.  My son is 6 1/2 months old now and I am still losing hair the same amount as if I were pregnant.  (I'm NOT pregnant now lol).  I talked to my midwife and she told me it was the horomones still straightening themselves out, and that it might take my body a little time to get use to not being pregnant after two years of it.  I would still talk to your OB and make sure that is what it is.

Hi there, losing hair after baby's born is totally normal!!! During pregancy you don't "molt", shed hair. I think it's the body's way of "insulating" baby while pregnant. I lost a TON of hair about 5-7 months after having my daughter. It doesn't seem to happen to everyone, but it has to a lot of my friends. It's totally normal. It's just shedding all the hair that would have shed during the time of your pregancy. It will stop after a month or two. Some of it will come back too. ;^)

Oh and yes, I am a hairdresser too and like the lady before said, Nioxin is very good and can lessen the shedding and promote new growth.

It's completely the post partum/breastfeeding thing. I am going through the same thing with baby #2. I went through it already with my firstborn as well. About 3 months after weaning him, I started to feel like it was getting back to normal.

But remember, your hair may never go back to the way it was, aging and hormones just have a way of doing that to us!

It's normal, something to do with hormones.  I had the exact same thing happen to me after my son was born and luckily for me I worked in a doctors office so there were plenty of docs around to ask and they all said it's normal...sucky for us but normal and yes, it will grow back.  May take a bit, depending on how fast your hair grows and the length you want it but it will grow.

my son is 8 months and i'm still losing lots of hair. i am also pregnant so that could be the cause of it as well. it will grow back though. mine is growing back on it's own. i had no idea what these little hairs were at the front, i was actually at my hair dresser's last wk and he told me that it's the hair growing back from what i lost from my son. no worries if i run my hand through my hair it's covered in hair!....i was hoping it would stop soon but with another one on the way i doubt it!...lol

My OB told me to expect hair loss around 4 months post-partum. That came right on schedule for me. Yours sounds a little later, but it could be the same thing. I would double check with your OB, though.

My baby is 4 month now & my hair has just started to thin out..... I was shocked since I swear I haven't seen a stray hair since the day I got pregnant! haha Although, my hair did get excessively thick during the nine months.... Anyway, thanks for these posts; puts my fears at ease.... I'll try Nioxin

I had that happen when I had my second child 24 years ago. Mine did come back... I think it is the sudden change in hormones. It didn't happen with my first child so I'm just guessing that I didn't have as much of a change in hormones. My doctor didn't really seem to know why either. I hope this helps you. Also, I did notice that my hair got really thick just before I had my second child.

OMG YESSSS! I have very long and thinck hair. After my 2nd girl though my hair came out in heaps!!! I could run my fingers through it and have a hand full of hair that wasn't attached to my head. I went crazy thinking I was gonna be bald. I went to my dr and everything. It is fine though!!! It stopped after about a month and my hair grew and you can't tell at all. It is just a freaky thing when you are going through it. Put it up and try not to think about it. It will be ok!!

OMG, thought it was just me.. Then when I spoke with my Doctor she told me because of my hormones and trying to level off so just cut it or watch it come out, I chose the latter and cut it. Its the most nerve racking moment for a woman....

As a mom and a hair stylist I would like to introduce you to Nioxin. It will help support the hair you haven't lost. It's not a miracle shampoo, but it works by keeping your scalp health to promote hair regrowth. Most of my hair has grown back, so don't lose hope.

I was there too.  I lost some hair after i had my daughter.  My doctor told me that it could be stress related. She also said that it is common for breastfeeding moms to lose some hair and not to be alarmed it would grow back. Mine did. No worries.

Yes it will come back. It's because while a woman is pregnant, during either the second or third trimester (can't remember which or if it's both), you don't loose any hair at all because of your hormones. After the baby is born, your body has to adjust to the hormone loss and with that comes the hair loss. Unfortunately, we loose quite a bit of hair (I did with both my kids). It will grow back. Don't fret. :)
