I have a 2 yr old girl. She has recently discovered hair twirling. I am afraid she will do it too tightly. A few times already almost ended with scissors to get it off her finger as it started to turn purple. I cant get her to understand. Any suggestions on what to try so she doesnt end up with an unwanted hair cut?

Hello Christy! I don't know if this is what you want to hear but ever since I was a little girl I have twirled my hair and I am now 27 and still do it all the time. I get it pretty tight and tie it in a little tiny bun on the top of my head. The feeling of the twirling and rubbing the twirled hair is so soothing to me and it comforts me and it is usually a sign I am tired or thinking. Not an answer to your question but just thought you might want to know your little girl is most def not the only hair twirler! :)

As a hairstylist, I have seen many children with short haircuts due to this same problem. I think she will outgrow this if you dont make too big of a deal about it verbally (like dont let her know it is a "problem" or let her hear you talk about it). Things you can do: one would be to keep her hair up and tied out of the way. Secondly, you can try and keep her hands busy with something else. Everytime you see her twirl her hair, quickly redirect her to something else like...idk i cant think right now. Like a doll or something, yeah a doll with short hair. Maybe she likes the feel of it. Also, notice when she does the hair twirling. Is she tired, hungry, or bored at the time? If all else fails, short hair doesnt have to be awful if you have a good stylist. One client of mine has her daughters hair short but she is just adorable anyways. It is cut shorter where she twirls but to keep the girly look she has earrings and that really works. Hope this helps.

My 6 year old has been doing that for about 3 years now. She usually does it when she is stressed of feeling a loss of control. For the first year she did that I had to keep her hair braided or pulled up almost all the time. She doesn't do it as much any more, just once in a while. I just ask her to get mommy the brush and then I brush her hair for a while. If she continues I pull her hair back in her choice of styles.
