Has anyone had to have their gallbladder removed during pregnancy?

I'm 8 weeks pregnant with my second child. I've been having stomach problems for the past 4 years and over the past two weeks have started to have gallbladder attacks. On my mother's side, both great-grandmothers, grandmother, mother, and her two sisters have all had gallbladder disease/stones and have had their gallbladders removed. After being diagnosed with gallstones, I have been placed on a low/no fat diet and am now only having mild attacks. Problem is, out of the foods that I can eat, I have been getting heartburn, nausea, and feel downright ill (I also have GERD). I'm really considering having my gallbladder removed during the 2nd trimester due to my illness and family history. Just wanted to know if anyone has had or knows anyone who has had to go through this.

Im speaking from a mothers point of veiw.. my daughter is all most 5 months pregnant, shes had gall bladder problems before she got prenant,, but wasnt really that bad. then just two days ago, I heard her vomiting.. we insisted she go to the hosp. they said she had major gastric problems.. they gave her meds to help her but she still had major pains and a lil more vomiting,, two days later shes up and around.. poor thing I think shes going to have her gall bladder out, if she can wait till the babies born..

in addition to that, i was told that my gallstones were hormone related, due to my pregnancy so the foods I ate didnt really affect it! Get well soon xxx

Wow,mine was removed when my daughter was 2 mo.s old I couldnt imagine during pregnancy .I thnk the pain is worse than Labor lol

I don't really want to but I am eating less than 500 calories a day because of my food restrictions and being so ill and that worries more than having the surgery. Also with my family history, I am basically doomed for something to go wrong with the gallbladder during the pregnancy and need emergency surgery anyway.

You are so right about the pain. It was far worse than labor pain. I've never felt anything like this before and would not even wish the pain on my worst enemy!!! It is truly excrutiating.

Hi I suffered with my gallstones all the way through my 2nd/3rd trimesters and was even admitted to hospital for a week when the pain was too bad. I waited though and got my gallbladder removed when LO was 8 weeks old via keyhole surgery. Best thing I ever did as I couldnt face that pain again!!!

I had my gallbladder removed...not when i was pregnant but after. Very simple surgery usually an outpatient one. And boy is it worth it!!! There is no pain that compares to a gallbladder attack!! Good luck!

i first started having problems 4 weeks after my second child but it took them four years to work out what was wrong, i was put on a no fat diet for a year and found if i ate anything brown ie brown pasta, rice etc that I wasnt so bad , I had my gallbladder out with keyhole and everything went well but I took about 2 weeks to stop being in pain from the operation and to walk anyway up right.. Im glad i had the operation but am not sure if I could have gone through it whilst I was pregnant.I would suggest sticking to the diet and having it after the baby is born.Hope this is of some help

maybe you can help me by telling me what to look for for red flags thanks Tina

Unfortunately I had no red flags. I've been suffering with stomach problems for a while. My heartburn/indigestion has been bad for a while and only much worse while pregnant. As far as gallbladder attacks, they hit me like a semi. Out of no where, with no warning, I had the worst stabbing and extreme pain right below and behind my right breast. I told my husband that if it were on my left side I would have sworn it was a heart attack. The pain quickly spread up my chest on the right side into my shoulder and neck. I couldn't take deep breaths because it just made it worse. I couldn't sit, lie down, and found myself pacing back and forth trying not to panic. It was worse pain than labor for my first child. It lasted about 2-3 hours and then, boom, gone like nothing happened. The next attacks all happened the same way and about the same time of day (evening). After my last attack this past Thursday, I have had constant dull pain under my ribcage on the right side that is slightly tender to the touch. I can tell you this, if you experience chills, fever, and extreme vomitting during an attack you need to get the the hospital as it is likely a stone is lodged and you are facing an infection (something I am horrified of and pretty much doomed to happen). I'll keep you updated on information my OB/Gastro give me as I go along.
