Yes, it is based on the original DISTAR system. The SRA DISTAR is a newer adaptation that works out some of the kinks with the original program. Research and comparttive studies repeatedly show it is far more productive in teaching reading and reading comprehension than whole language systems and more effective, though to a lesser degree, than other phonics based methods. English is phonic despite the fact that there may be multiple phonems for each letter of combination. The original system did not cover the various phonems as thoroughly as the SRA. There will still be some phonems that are not covered, for example ough can be pronounced "oc" as in hough.
I used the program to teach three children to read. One of them is severely dyslexic and was failing miserably in school, now an honors student. Another was only three years old, he is not a genious.

The Distar Reading program is so great for my kindergartener. We spend 15-20 minutes per day and we finished half the lessons already. It has really boosted her confidence because she is the youngest in her class.

Yes! I am now starting my 2 yr. 8 month old son on the distar reading program. I like that it has a script and that it helps correct mistakes immediately. My son seems to like it. It also helped that i have exposed him to books when he was younger. It has helped him focus and he has longer attention span.

Yes, distar reading is a good program. I am a special educator. This program uses direct instruction which is the best way found to teach children reading skills. This can be used for children up into elementary school.
