I am sorry this is so lengthy.
I have RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome) and my doctor prescribed melatonin and sleep aids to help me get to sleep instead of the normally prescribed medicine (for nerve disorders like Parkinson's) that includes severe weight gain as one of the side effects. Because I am already at risk for obesity, we decided that taking the prescription would be more detrimental to my health than the OTC herbal supplement melatonin, and the generic sleep aid (which is actually an anti-histamine).
Fast forward 2 years, and I am 35 weeks pregnant and will nurse our son once he is born. I am struggling with the RLS at night and have not taken the melatonin because there is no documentation either for or against taking it during pregnancy and my doctor stated it would be "at my own risk". I am not willing to trade my son's health for my own comfort, so if anyone has had experience taking melatonin during pregnancy or while nursing, please let me know what your concerns or opinions are. Thank you.
