Ive recently have discovered some things that are not good to give your toddler. I did not know that gelatin was made out of crushed animal bones. I believe mom take care, are the ones that research for the children to give themthe best start. Any other tips or food discoveries good or bad please share!

Ok, my apologies. It was just the way it came across, I obviously misinterpreted :)

I wasn't being cross or rude. I directly meant that in a positive way. I asked for advice and i got it. I really did appreciate it. And I said you must be a good mom because you provided a fact which meant you took the time to go out of ur way and research. Im quite sure this negativity is not what I signed on for when I joined this website.

Just so you're aware Shawnn, there are vegetarian substitutes for gelatin, such as agar-agar,carrageenan (both seaweed extracts), pectin (from fruits like apples) and konjac (from a plant).
I know gelatin is not something that most people think of when they think about what a vegetarian/vegan can eat, let alone whether there are friendly alternatives :) I just watch insane amounts of the Food Network, so know that there are alternatives :P
Homemade jello (with juice) is much better for you anyways. And just as, if not more yummy than the store bought crap :P

And the littlest one is currently grumbling at me because I'm breathing wrong :P but doing great. He's about 12lbs now (10lbs at birth, 4wks 3days old :P)

I did, too, Denikka, until I looked a little further...LOL...I give my niece a hard time because she's a vegetarian (so she claims) but loves Jello, and uses gelatin in her kitchen...

But Victoria seems to have her vision a little skewed, if she's recommending Gerber, but saying to avoid Gelatin, because Gerber uses gelatin in their products...LOL

How's LO?

Not to mention the fact that Gerber are probably not the people to rely on for your accurate information.......

I thought it was from the marrow Shawnn.
But, the *what gelatin is made of* issue aside, I'm not really sure why a product made from animal bones would be bad anyways?
Marrow is GOOD for you. It's high in good fats and protein. The bone itself contains calcium. Among lots of other vitamins, minerals and general good things.

Oh hey look, Googled it and gelatin is made out of collagen, which is derived from different products such as pork skins, pig, horse, or cow bones, or split cow hides. They are also looking into using fish products to get around some of the religious obstacles that stem from the use of gelatin (I'm guessing mainly for Muslim and Jewish people who aren't supposed to eat pork products) Still not all that gross in my books :P nor is it bad for you.
The production process is strictly monitored to be as safe as possible and, while there MIGHT be a small risk that the processing of materials won't eliminate the risk of disease (specifically Mad Cow is mentioned), the current research is deemed as *inconclusive*.
But the SSC has deemed that the risk associated with bovine gelatin is low to zero.

Sorry, Victoria, but gelatin is NOT made from "crushed bones". Food-grade gelatin is produced mainly from two raw materials, beef skin and pig hide

Victoria, I don't know whether you were being tongue in cheek here, but let's be realistic, that is a direct cut and paste from the Gerber website. I don't know it all. I just know how to do my research. And my research tells me that Gerber, if they have an article advising you not to have gelatin in your baby food, are full of shit, because they add it. Did YOU know that?

Believe me, this has no bearing on whether you are a good mother or not, so not quite sure why you brought that into it. It has everything to do with opening your mouth and being vocal about your views. You asked for people to share, I shared. You don't like what I have to say, not my problem. At least I am providing facts.

Gerber has been around many years and is trusted by many parents. They advise away from gelatin for these reasons and I CHOOSE to follow their guidelines seeing as how they have made it their business to give children the best start and health possible.

How are extractions from crushed animal bones not good for you (you do realise it isn't ACTUALLY made of crushed animal bones, only the extractions)? I get that it might gross you out, but I'm not quite sure how something that grosses you out means it isn't good for you or your toddler. After all, I'll totally admit that eating any type of animal organ kind of grosses me out, and yet I KNOW that organ meats are better for me (and my children) than many other cuts.
