My daughter is about 25 lbs overweight.I have been overweight off and on my entire live. Currently, I am on a program through my doctor and have lost so far 20 lbs. My daughter eats a well rounded healthy diet though her portions are out of control. She dances regularly (though this summer she has not been dancing......) ....I want to provide her with fun and healthy way to maintain her current weight (doctor suggests she grow into the current weight instead of putting her on a diet plan.) and not ruin her self esteem self worth and confidence! Suggestions......

I agree with the doctor. She can grow into the weight, just keep her active. Turn the fat into muscle.

There are lots of fun, physical summer activities.
Swimming is great, but you have to actually swim.....standing in the water playing beach ball or laying on a float won't do the trick. Diving, laps, sharks and minoes (sp?), alligator, categories, are all fun pool games.
Turn on the music and dance while you clean up the house. The house has to be cleaned whether it is dance season or not, so why not use it to keep her in practice (don't get mad if she gets distracted with dancing and stops cleaning, cleaning isn't really her job).
Biking, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, sailboarding, wind surfing, surfing, are all fun at her age. Pick and accessible one depending on where you live.
Take a water aerobics class together--those boogers look easy, but they will WORK YOU OUT, and you'll have fun doing it.
Take a Zumba class together--SO MUCH FUN! And as a dancer, she will already be great at it, which will boost her self esteem. Let her teach you some moves!
Take a kickboxing class or martial arts classes together. This is not only a great workout, but teaches both focus and self defense!

All in all, just make it fun, and do it with her. If it is fun, she won't think of it as exercise, and if you do it with her, she will see herself supporting you, not you pushing her to lose weight.

Thank you. Yes I agree with you. My mom put me in the weight watchers plan when I was 8 ...I was embarrassed and hated it. She is 25 lbs overweight. Love the idea about plating. I will try that with her.

Thanks again.

IMO, a 10 year old should never be told she needs to lose weight or put on a diet. that just lays the groundwork for poor self image and even potentially an eating disorder. Rather, continue with the healthy diet and "plate" her food, so she gets what she needs and not huge portions. Of course, once and while she may want extra of something and that's part of enjoying life and food. Encourage her to be as active as possible and get her back into dance. If she can't be in dance now, she can be outside, riding her bike or kicking a soccer ball around. Having her help plan meals and to cook them will help her learn about eating a balanced diet. Is she actually overweight or you just don't want her to gain? At ten, she is likely getting ready to go through puberty and my plump up a bit even more before she gets taller and fills out in other places.
