i am newly pregnant.

of all the foods they recommend you don't eat while pregnant, how closely did you follow suit?

i.e. deli meats, seafood, soft cheeses.

i am generally not one to believe that following a healthy, balanced diet can steer you wrong. and a little of anything in moderation can't hurt. also, with feta and other soft cheeses, are there really any cheeses in the US (in mass grocery stores) that AREN'T pasteurized? i thought that was a requirement.

just curious your experiences?

thanks,

tara

I wasn't too paranoid, but avoided things like sushi and caffeine. I did eat deli meat (even cold though the doc told me to heat it up--oops!), and pretty much all cheeses. My daughter is as healthy as a horse so either I just got lucky or what I ate never actually posed a real threat. I also cut out the obvious alcoholic beverages (that last month I was craving one BAD). People told me not to eat peanut butter because it could cause a peanut allergy and all sorts of crap, but I needed protein in my diet since I had gestational diabetes so I had peanut butter as a snack pretty much every day. No one in my family has a peanut allergy so the odds of Elena having it is slim. Don't worry too much, just use your best judgement and double check with your obgyn. :) Congrats!

i was just curious how rigorously everyone sticks to the guidelines.

I ate deli meat and soft cheeses. I did steer clear of certain fish, but that's how I always am. My baby turned out fine. I'm sure they're ok in moderation, although you may get some people saying something along the lines that your going to develop a severe mental defect... Ignore those women. Seriously. No amount of Deli meat can cause these problems.
