Talk to the teacher for sure. She may not have known how much this mattered to your son, and there might be more going on than your son realises.

Sometimes clubs are more than what they seem. Last year they had "Friendship Club" at school. The kids thought Friendship Club was fun, but it was actually a program meant to build self esteem and social skills and the girls who needed the program were invited to join first. In the end there was enough space for everyone who wanted to go, but had there not have been the space they would have made sure the kids who really needed the program got it.

Anyway, it's very possible that poetry club is actually to help kids who need extra practise with writing and language. Calling it Poetry Club makes it sound fun though, and not like it's extra help.

Talk to the teacher. Like i said, she might not have know that your son feels left out, or there might have been a reason why certain kids were selected.
