HELP!! Husband "insulted" I won't leave 5 week old

I'm a homemaker and my Mom is getting a community award and tickets are limited. I told my husband that he will need to have our newborn and his (very troubled) 5 year old for a few hours during the day. He complains about anytime he has to deal with both at once. This event will be 45min-1hr from where we live so I asked if he would take the boys to the local science museum which would be 15min away from me. He went on a rampage about how insulted he is and its said just pump a bottle I'm not leaving the house. I told him it has nothing to do with him, I don't feel comfortable being that far away from my son and he continued scolding me about this. We have very different points of view and he constantly travels. When his son was a few months old he left him with a babysitter (non-family) for over a week to go on vacation and I could never imagine doing this. Help!! I need him to understand this is about my need to be close to my son not an attack on him.

Well, you did just basically tell him you don't trust him with the baby, so I can see why he's insulted. Having kids outside the house is much more difficult than staying home with them. However, I can also see WHY you don't trust him with the baby. (and I hated pumping so much, I would do anything to avoid it, too.)

Why don't you hire a cousin or teenager or bribe a friend to come along and hold the baby outside the awards ceremony, that way the baby will be close by but cared for while you focus on your mom. But you can still nurse him when he needs it, you can communicate via texting, and the sitter can wander the halls of the building you're in, or go to a nearby park or somewhere quiet with the baby where she's out of the way but close. And then your husband has only one child to watch.

He's being kind of rude about it, but I can sort of see why he'd feel put out. You want him to have the kids for a few hours, but you want him to haul the kids almost an hour away from home and hang out at a museum for a few hours so that you aren't far from your newborn. What if the 5 year old is going on a rampage? Is he allowed to leave? Or does he have to stay at the museum so that you're still in close proximity. Honestly, if I were him, I would have handled it in a nicer fashion, but I would STILL consider your request to be a gigantic pain in the ass.

Is there any possibility of taking your newborn with you to the event? It's not like they're going to ask for a separate ticket for a 5-week-old. And if you take a nursing cover with you, you can nurse the baby if he cries or gets fussy.
