My 7 year old daughter has been doing gymnastics for 1 1/2 now. She goes Three nights a week...Mondays from 4:30 to 8 with a break in between, Thursdays the same, and Fridays from 4:30 - 6:30. She is in TOPS the advanced group and is very talented. The last couple weeks she has been complaining that her stomach hurts and wants to go home an hour into gym class. Today she broke down and told me that she cant do it anymore and the coach yells at her if she cant do something the right way. I know they are just doing their job and see the potential in her, but I didn't like to see her so upset today. Also, she is 7...and I don't think a 7 year old should be stressed out like that. But on the other hand, I know she has a future in this sport and could even make it to the Olympics when she is older, she is very good. But it should be fun to right? She has fun but lately she has been stressed out about it. I don't really know how to approach the situation, the other moms at the gym would tell their kids to suck it up and go back down there and do what your told...I am not like that, and I want her to be happy, not miserable. What should I do?!?!?!

I'm not sure if every second of training is fun when you're working at the competitive level. Athletes are often extremely driven, and have the desire to push themselves even when they aren't having a good time because they are so focused on their goal.

I have no idea what you should do. On one hand this could just be a bump in the road and your daughter may get through this phase and continue just fine. On the other hand, even if you have talent you may not have the personality to handle the training schedule and the atmosphere that goes long with competitive sport. If the goal is for her to make it to the Olympics things are only going to get a lot more demanding than they are right now.

Does she need to be training at this level right now? Could she train at a less elite level (more gymnastics for fun level) for the rest of this year and go back to the advanced training if she wants to when she's eight?
