Help! Is turning 8 years old a huge attitude changer for girls?

My daughter just turned 8 and she seems like she is going through something. She argues everything I say, she is emotional all the time, she is mean to her little brother. Yes I know this is all normal child behavior, but not for her. She has always been so gentile with her brother and she has always been such a good girl. I've heard the transition into third grade is a rough one plus her school, third grade is the first year in the middle school. So, is it just transitioning that has her acting different or should I be concerned that it is more than that. I don't know any of the kids in her class this year, whereas the first three years of school she was grouped with all the same kids. So I don't know if she is being bullied at school or if she just feels like I am too strict with her because a lot of the other parents here let their kids call all the shots and let them do whatever they want to. I don't want my daughter to hate me but I don't think I am being too strict or anything. Any suggestions to alleviate this transition? Or should I just wait it out a bit to see if she adjusts and returns to her normal happy self?

She really shouldn't be acting like that. It is a little weird. If she watches a lot if teen shows, or her friends do, she might just be acting like them. Nowadays, being popular is huge. Speaking from personal experience, don't bother her to much about school and try to do mother daughter things she'll agree to and establish a good relationship. Then, if she's having any troubles she'll be willing to tell you and let you help.
