There is nothing wrong w/ going to bed w/ a cup of water. If it is milk then do what Sarah suggested and let her have the cup and then brush her teeth (and then maybe a few snuggles).

I feel you on the 'cry like someone is hurting her' thing. My son's EVERY cry for the first 3 years of his life was a scream like he was being murdered. You hear about people learning their baby's cries and what they mean and stuff... lol Not in this house. Thankfully no matter what the problem was it could 'usually' be solved by snuggles and nursing... but we also bed shared for years. ;)

She is frustrated that her bedtime routine is disrupted. Give her a cup of water. Or let her have a cup of milk and then brush her teeth and put her down. She cries because she doesn't have the verbal skills to tell you that she is unhappy.
