help! my 17 month old son has started acting like a crazy person when I try to feed him dinner.

I don't know what to do anymore. My son refuses to eat dinner every single night. It doesn't matter what I offer - as soon as he gets into the high chair he throws his food, starts crying and then tries to get out of his chair. I'm at my wits end. I just don't understand it. He sits in this same chair for breakfast and is fine. Lunch - is sometimes tricky but he'll usually eat something. But dinner - he goes crazy. I can't figure it out. I'm trying to sit as a family to eat dinner but he goes crazy. Last night I tried being tough - when he got really crazy I took him out of the chair without him eating anything and told him to go play. He stood there screaming and crying and wanting to be picked up. After about 10 min he wanted back in the chair but as soon I put him in it he was refusing to eat again and crying to get out.

Help? what do I do. I know if I let him walk around and randomly come over for bites of food he'll eat - but I feel like I should be teaching him to sit and eat.

I agree with Holly. Just be patient and consistent. He'll eventually figure out that he's not just going to get his way and he'll decide if he wants to eat or be in bed more.

Of course, if you don't CARE that he's out of his chair and just coming for bites... that is another solution that would be fine.

I think it depends on what is more important to YOU right now and neither answer is wrong.

ok, well, perhaps when he throws a fit, tell him, do you want to go to bed? and if he continues, pick him up and say ok, then you are going to bed. take him to his bed, shut the door, and continue eating. give him a minute. and try again. those are his choices, dinner or bed.

try getting him into a booster seat... maybe he wants to sit with his family as a big boy
