Okay I need help, I don't know what to do. My husband is suffering from depression and has been for the last 2 years since his mother passed away. He's ok some of the time but when he goes downhill he gets drunk, ducks out of family life and cannot cope with our kids, two girls 9 and 3. The worse thing is he says he doesn't really like the 3 years old (she's being a typical toddler at the moment so is hard work) but I don't know what to do. She can sense his detachment and I feel so sorry for her! Of course he doesn't like the idea of therapy but I can't help feeling if he won't help himself he's going to destroy what was a wonderful family life. Should I get tough and insist he gets some professional help?

He does need help. I would sit down with him and let him know how it's affecting the family. Urge him to seek help before it tears the family apart. Sometimes our men need it said to them bluntly because they can't see the big picture.

Thank you Michelle - I can't pretend it's not happening anymore. I have found myself almost hating him recently as everything falls to me to sort out and I have to tread on eggshells around him. I just hope he will listen to me.
