Hi, my son will be four at the end of next month. He is not remotely potty trained. He asks to sit occasionally but he thinks that "sitting on the potty" means he's "going to the potty." But nothing comes out. Not pee, not poop. I realize poop will be more difficult because he has constipation issues. But why no pee? It seems like there is a disconnect. He doesn't seem to know when he has to go or how to actually do it. I'm not sure what to do next....

Self-induced constipation - this is why with mine it very quickly got to a nearly-everyday battle, of "either you do a smelly on the potty right now, or I'll put a suppository in you"

Glad to hear you are going to the doctor. Good luck! Please give us an update.

Thanks I'm going to speak to the doctor. The potty prize box doesn't work because again he doesn't seem to understand how to go. He does not have siblings.

Have you tried the potty prize box? It really works if you do it right. You have a goody box in bathroom and it can be filled with some of his favourite candy or some big boy pants and small cheap toys. If he goes in the potty he gets a goody but only if he goes. It really can work as long as he only gets prize if he goes. If you have older children in the home they can help by showing him they get a prize cause they went in the potty. On the other side of this there could be a medical reason as to why he doesn't seem to feel the sensation. I had the same problem as a young child and around age four I had to have my bladder tube dilated. Actually my daughter wet her self all the time till we got a hole in her heart repaired. The doctor told me that had nothing to do with it but she stopped throwing up all her meals and wetting herself when her heart was repaired so I have to believe it was the swelling in the heart putting pressure on her other organs because it was an immediate halt of both as soon as it was repaired. Make sure there are no medical problems would be my first step.

I'm going to talk to the doctor. I put him in underwear over the weekend and he had accidents (peeing) but didn't say anything. And when he sat nothing happened. So I don't know what's going on. He seems fine with sitting on the potty and wearing underwear.

What worked for me was taking my kids (separately, 4 years apart) to the store to buy big kid undies. They helped pick them out. At home, we read potty books, watch potty shows, and no cloths. Yup. Nothing. I had tile floor and wood. If they really wanted something on, it was the undies. They don't wick away the moisture the way diapers or pull-ups do, so it was really uncomfortable, and they didn't like the feeling. We would sit on the potty every 1/2 hr or if they wanted to or felt the urge. It was a full time job for each child for sure. No overnight diapers either. Be ready to do a lot of laundry.

The naked thing has worked for many people that I know, and that is why I tried it. Took about 2 weeks, but it worked like a charm. You are right though, pooping takes longer to learn. Trust me, he will not be in diapers into his 30's, but he might not be allowed in certain programs if he is not potty trained. It is a tough job.

Do you have concerns that may need to be addressed by a doctor? The only reason I ask is because you mentioned a "disconnect".
