Hi. My son has never been a great sleeper ( up every 2-4 hours) Wants and tries to sleep but just cannot seem to fall asleep. He takes two naps daily for about 1 hour and we have tried every piece of advice and both cry out and no-cry methids. We tried to furburize this week but after 4 nights saw no improvement at all except exhaustion. My husband and i have hardly slept this year at all and it is really hard on the baby. He is a happy delightful little boy and feel so bad he struggles so much. We have used white noise, humidifiers, changed bedtimes, night lights, etc. Even in my bed he struggles to fall asleep and plays with my hair all night. Any suggestions or support would be much appreciated. I am hoping this is nothing physiologic and one day he will just grow our of it. Thank you :)

I feel your pain! I have a 17-month-old who, until recently, was up every 2-4 hours (now he begins the night sleeping about 7 hours and then is up every hour). About 6 weeks ago, we pushed the issue of going to 1 nap, and that's what seemed to help. Now he naps from 12-2 (we don't let him nap for more than 2 hours, otherwise he's terrible at night). If you haven't tried that, it might be worth a try for a week to see if it helps. Good luck!

Hi Allison - thank you. We are not feeding him during the nite and he does not ask for his baba till about 6 am. We have tried to see what happens and fed him but did not help. He goes to sleep around 7 pm - we read, rock and he asks for baba and when done points to his crib. He lays down but really stuggles and plays with his hair as i rub his back. Tends to go to sleep okay but For some reason he wakes up every 2-4 hours and we have tried rubbing his back and letting him cry in intervals for up to 2 hours for four days without benefit. We have tired only one nap but he is just more cranky and does not sleep better. Appreciate you taking the time to post:)

First, for the nighttime... are you feeding him during the night? If you are, that will surely keep him from sleeping through. How many hours does he sleep at night and does he have problems going back to sleep?

For the daytime, I think two hours is not so bad. Perhaps once the morning nap is cut out he will sleep longer?

My oldest has always been a horrible napper and I am suspicious she has ADHD like her father. But that is something that can not be diagnosed until she is in school.

Thanks. My son is sooo active he never sits still. He pretty much asks to go to sleep so we know he is ready and tired. Poor guy gets sooo cranky during the day so I know he is not sleeping enough. My niece has a sleep disorder so we may look in that since we have exhausted all other options. Thanks again.

By the time my daughter was 14 months, she was only having a short nap once a day before lunch. Babies should normally sleep really well when they are tired, so perhaps you could increase his activities during the day. I know my daughter is exhausted chasing the kitten outside for about 1 hour. Winter also can't sleep unless she has a teddy with her. Maybe he should have a bed time toy so that they don't feel lonely? Also my mum said that a good indication of when babies are tired is when their feet get extremely warm. It works with my girl and I've noticed a pattern where she won't sleep well if her feet are cold, but better when they are warm. :] Hope this helps a little.
