Helping a young child deal with abandonment of her father

My ex recently (10 days ago) moved out of state. Some of the last words he said to my 4 and 1/2 year old daughter were "I'm leaving, I'm not your father, you will never see me again..." This was the most horrible thing to hear and witness. He has made no effort to contact her since. He is an angry unwell person who has mostly been a negative and toxic influence in her life. I know that we are better off without him in our lives, but at the end of the day, she loves her dad and wonders when he'll come back.. Last night she repeated these terrible words he said to her and said, "now I don't have a daddy." she also thinks that if she's really good he'll send her a xmas present. My heart is breaking for her. I was caught off guard and left speechless for what to say to her. Here is my question: What kind of age appropriate script can I stick to when she brings up her dad or asks questions about him? I want to address and validate her comments but want to keep it short without sharing too much information. I am looking for book suggestions as well..
