We just said we left it at so-and-so's house - too far to go back to get it. He cried for a night, and asked every now and then, but that was it. And this was a child who sucked on it night and day for years.

With my kids - what worked was asking the dentist to have a llittle chat with them about it. Having a non-parental authority figure tell them the dummy has to go really works - but I think this is more applicable if the child is 2-3 years like mine were. also - get rid of all the dummies - cold turkey.

My sil poked a pin size hole in the tips of my nephews and said they were broken. He didn't like it with the hole so just stopped using it.

Don't give it to him unless he asks for it or just toss them out in the garbage without him knowing. I know it kind of sounds cruel to just throw it out, but it works. You can't find it and the child usually just accepts it.

cut the end off of them and then give them to him. it won't feel the same and they usually wont' want them anymore. tell him they're broken
