Medical experts say a child can not control his bowel until the age of two and bladder control comes later.

Look for signs like not wanting to sit in a soiled nappy, hiding to poop, going long periods of time in a dry nappy during the day, wanting to run around with no nappy and an interest in the toilet.

Do not rush your little one as they will rebel and rivert back into wetting themselves. Once you have made a decision to start then do not use pull ups during the day as a toddler sees them as a nappy so has permission to pee in them. Use cloth pants and take your child to the toilet every half an hour until they pee and then wait an hour and start again. If you stick to this for three days you should see an improvement in less accidents. If you do not then wait another month and try again.

It's different from kid to kid. You can encourage the kid to potty train, but you can't force it.

For my daughter's 2nd birthday we got her potty stuff....the chair, panties and Elmo's Potty Time DVD. I let her flush and get the toilet paper for me when I went to the bathroom. I would encourage her to sit on the potty during the day and we'd talk about it.

A day or two each month she'd have a diaper free day. Those were days when we were home all day. If she started to go a little, we'd run to the potty and finish there. After four months of doing this (only a day or two each month) she 'got it' and I put her in panties during the daytime. She was a pro with very few accidents after another two months.

She's three now. She still has accidents here and there, but I'm very pleased with where we are.

Also...sorry...my daughter is 16 months old and strips when she is wet and that is about the same age my son was when he did it to. Granted she may be ready but the taking off a wet diaper is normal for the age.
