My 6 year old daughter started first grade this year. We are struggling with sitting down and doing homework. It seems she is more willing to throw and attitude about it and then a fit, instead of following through and just doing the required ready. She does not do this behavior when she is at her dads. Has anyone else dealt with this and what solutions did you come up with>

Hi Maureen - my son is 6 and also in 1st grade. It helps us to have a little bit of downtime when he comes home since he was just in school all day. But he doesn't get to to play with friends or go to the park until all homework is done. It is a good motivator to get the HW done! Try a reward system too. Obviously HW has to be done, but when the HW is hard for my son (reading especially), we use a reward system for how many sight words he gets correct. Skittles and pennies are great. Just try to be consistent and she'll start to get into a routine soon. Hope that helps!
