I've seen lots of articles online and in my baby books that have a list of things to pack in my hospital bag... but they all seem pretty excessive. As a first time Mum, this is all uncharted territory for me.... Any adivce from experienced mum's on what I will actually need in my hospital bag and what I can leave at home? Ideally I'd like to take only the essentials so I'm not hauling in a big ol' suitcase.

A change of clothes for you to go home in.
Undies, and feminine supplies. Hospital will have some pads for after your birth, but you may be more comfortable with 'yours'.
Extra nightclothes (some hospitals allow you to change out of hospital gown after delivery)
Your choice of diaper, but nursery will provide some as well
Your choice of formula if you are going that route
A change of clothing for LO. Ok, you may want to pack a couple outfits, because you may want to change to a different one than your original choice. Makeup, if you wear any, feeling pretty is always nice after you feel like you've been through the wringer.

a couple of soft blankets, car seat (complete with head bumpers, etc)...

Off the top of my head.

I'm a 'minimalist', so I never pack a lot to do anything. I packed a comfy set of clothes for my ride home, a couple of cute outfits, diapers, wipes, formula for LO, and away we went.

If there was one thing i would have wanted to take with,it was an icecream!During labor i wanted an icecream to take my mind off the pain and to cool my lips..my hubby went to the hospital cafeteria but they werent selling icecreams because it was winter. If i would have known and thought befor i would have bought icecream to take with. And a labello for my lips. Dont forget to take a camera with to take photos of your newborn, its so fun to look at them now when our son is bigger.

Ask your midwive,i got a list for the bag from the hospital.By us for example we only had to bring 1outfit for the baby for when we left because while we were in the hospital they have baby outfits there for the baby to use. Also diapers, wipes and even Formula and bottles was provided by the hospital. My advice is to take some comfortable clothes with for your self.Maybe a cd or two with music you would like to listen to when you are in labor,if they have a cd player there. The rest would be what Shawnn listed. And dont worry,if you forget something or need something afterwards you can always ask somebody to bring it.I asked my mom to bring me some Fanta and to buy me some large tshirts.
