How can I get baby over fear of certain noises?

I am just beginning to feed 6 1/2 month old son baby vegetables. I want to make my own food. Today, when I was using the food processor to puree butternut squash he got scared and started screaming. Any solutions to help him not be scared of the noise from the food processor?

Yeah, my almost-3 year old will still run into another room and slam the door if I run the vacuum cleaner, hair dryer, blender, or food processor. He hates it. Also he's frightened of public washrooms because of the air hand dryers. Sorry... I think some kids are just sensitive to sounds. But when they're older you can reason with them, and if they can push the button that makes the sound, they are less scared of it, even if they still don't like it. My two year old will now tolerate all those things but will say, "Too loud!"

You could try holding him and singing, turning it on only for short periods of time and then swinging him around to make him laugh... you know, make it fun. It might help him move past the crying stage into the merely wide-eyed quivery-lip stage.

Thank you so much for the suggestion, Elfrieda. I will try it. He seems to be fine with the blender at home but the handmill may help to be able to travel with.

Dana, I just thought I'd tell you there are handmills for mushing up food. That's better if you're just taking stuff from your plate and making it mushy for the baby, not for big batches, but it's very convenient to keep at the table and bring to restaurants and other people's houses. I liked mine very much. It was a Kidco Food Mill.

Thank you for your reply. I tried using the blender today instead of the food processor, and the blender did not scare him. So I guess I will be using the blender to make his food :)

I had to carry my daughter with one arm and run the vacuum with the other until she was almost 3 years old :) It just takes time.
