They make the special grips for the pencil that will help him hold it correctly. My sons preschool provided them for my son because his fine motor skills were behind. They also made other suggestions to help him like putting tiny objects in playdough and having him get them out, and said to use a lightbrite at home because they have to hold the little lights the same way they hold a pencil.

My son is in first grade now and although he's still not the best writer he's made drastic strides so I wouldn't stress it too much.

Thanks so much. I've tried some grips but he didn't want to use the pencil because it was on it. I will try some others because I didn't like the one I was given for him to use. I'll definitly try the clay suggestion & dig out the light bite as well.
