How can I get my 5 year old triplets to keep their playroom clean?

I have 5 year old triplets and a 7 year old. I have a beautiful playroom for them and have spent a lot of money on toy organizers, but they do not clean up any of their toys unless I sit in there and yell at them to do so. Any suggestions on how to teach them to stay organized? It kills me because they don't dare make a mess at school...Why do they clean and keep stuff organized there, but not at home?

Any replies greatly appreciated! Thank you!

At school there are set rules and expectations (and consequences for not following those rules)....have you created that kind of atmosphere with the play room at home? Sounds like they don't appreciate what they have, so teach them to appreciate and take care of their items. Talk to them about the play room rules, your expectations, and post the rules in the room. That's what would happen at school (I was a teacher). You could also have clean up time (also did this as a teacher, after indoor recess) - play a song or give them a certain amount of time to clean up the mess they have made. If you turn it into a game/competition or something fun, they are more likely to respond in a positive way. I would also say that they are old enough to have chores. Create a chart with the things you want them to do, cleaning the play room could be one of the jobs. If these ideas don't work you could start taking away toys that are left out, then they have to do a chore/activity/something to get a certain thing back. Hope this helps!!

Thank you Christy! I will be trying these wonderful ideas. With having so many girls playing with the same toys, its hard to say who played with what, they just blame each other. I will be making a chore chat though to see if that will help. Thanks!
