How can I get my baby to like being in the pool?

My son is almost 9 months old. We live in an apartment complex and of course it has a pool. We went out of town for mothers day and stayed in a hotel with an indoor pool and when we put him in the pool, he just started screaming and crying, we didnt even put him in past his toes. How can I get him to enjoy being in the water as much as I do?

What might be an idea, Lexi, is to start him off REALLY small. Take him outside if possible, or sit him in a dry bathtub. Take one of those small washbasins, and put just an inch or water in it, and then put in a bunch of plastic cups and squeaky toys. Let him explore it and get his hands a bit wet, and play with the toys, but don't push him.

Once he's more comfortable with that, then try this: pour some warm water in your bathtub, but not enough to actually cover the bottom -- just enough that there's about an inch or so of water near the plug, but that the opposite end is still dry. Do the same thing with the toys. Sit him in the dry end, and see if he starts to explore it. Smile and speak softly, but don't make a huge deal of it if he does touch the water -- you don't want to freak him out.

It'll take time, but it's worth the work -- a fear of water is something that can last a lifetime, and it's not fun to have.

Whatever you do just start small so you don't overwhelm your baby. Remember the world seems much bigger to them.

Try dipping your childs feet in first holding your baby securely! Cheering you baby on ALWAYS helps

Take it slow and go at his pace.

No pool here, but when my son was about a year and a half.... he would stick his toes in the ocean and be over it. Now at 3.... he LOVES the water... as long as it doesn't get in his eyes. ;)

It could just be that the water was too cold for him. That can happen in the beginning of the pool season. Or maybe the size of the pool was too much for him.

I guess I have to ask if he has a problem with baths in general. My 2 month old seems to like the water and I just bought her a bathing suit, but we haven't had a chance to see if she's ok with anything larger than a bathtub.

My advice would be to start your son out in a kiddie pool where the water temperature is comfortable and see where he goes from there. That's what I did with my older daughter and she's almost 7. Just give him time and don't force it.
