How can I tell if my son is sleep deprived?

DS does not sleep through the night and has been averaging about 7 hours sleep at night. His naps are not very long. On ocassion he may nap for a total if four or so hours. I would say he gets 10-12 hours in 24 hours. How can I tell if he is not sleeping enough?

Poor baby and poor you! That infant is definitely sleep-deprived. I think they need more like 15 hours of sleep every 24. Something that I didn't know until way later (my son also couldn't sleep, he slept about 9 hours out of every 24 for the first 3 months, it was horrible) was that some babies get over-stimulated way too easily. Even rocking can be too much excitement for them. If you wrap him up nice and tight (swaddle) and then sit quietly with him in a dark room it might help him fall asleep.
