How can you leave your child?

Hello my name is Caitlin and I am a single mom of a beautiful almost 3 year old son. I am currently in the process of taking my ex to court, very long and grueling process. So I have been wondering since I gave my ex certain days and times to call he calls every so often. I keep telling him to let me know a schedule for his work so we can work on the times yet he has not done so. He keeps saying he is going to turn in the parentage form to my attorneys office but again has not done so. Now it is going on week 3 that he has not called to talk to my son. Honestly I prefer him to be out of my son's life and to sign over his rights. He is a bad influence on many levels and my son does not need that in his life. My boyfriend has gratefully stepped up to the plate in taking care of my son when he was not even asked to and my son looks up to him so much. Again I do not care if my ex wants to be out of my son's life, but what I have been trying to understand is how you can not care about your child or simply give up? As a mother I could never imagine not communicating with the other parent to be there for my child. I just do not know I guess this is the psychology student coming out of me.

Thank you Michelle. That actually makes a lot of sense thinking about it now.

The difference between being a Mother to a Father is that we carry this child for 40 weeks, we feel it grow and give birth to it. If the Father isn't around during the pregnancy (and even when they are around) they don't get to form the same bond.
Some people also don't know how to be a good parent. If they haven't had a good example growing up, they don't know any better.
