How do help my Teen understand why I am so protective.

My Son turned 14 years old yesterday. He received several gifts that he asked for except for a smart phone. His Dad and I have told him all along that he would not get a smart phone until he is old enough to get it and pay for it his self. He has a phone that has unlimited texting but it does not have the internet. He has not said Thank You for any of the gifts he received because he didnt get the smart phone. He says all his friends has smart phones, but I know several of his friends that do not. I am afraid that kids have too much access to the internet without having it on their phone 24/7. But I dont know what to say to get him to understand this. If I have told him 1 time, I have told him 100 that God gave him to me to raise, not his friends. And one day I will have to answer to God for way I raised him, not his friends. Please help me with what to say to help him understand why I am so protective.

I wouldn't be explaining it anymore. Next time he asks why, tell him you already answered that and he needs to answer it himself.

I agree, no child/teen needs a smart phone UNTIL they can pay for it themselves. My daughter wanted one too (she is going on 14). I told her that when she gets a job, she can go and buy one. End of story. ;)
