How do I approach possible autism in my stepson to my husband?

I think my stepson might have autism. I've done a lot of research and it seems highly likely. I don't know how to bring it up to my husband though because every time I mention it he almost seems to get offended and my stepson's mom is the one taking him to his wellness checkups. They've determined that there is a language delay but aren't addressing any other symptoms. We are newly married and Alex just turned three so I don't want to overstep my boundaries during such an important time in his life. Any advice?

My daughter was recently diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder which is on the autism spectrum. The first sign that we had was her language delay. She is also 3 years old. What will more than likely happen is this, the doctors will probably send your stepson to a doctor to have his hearing checked. If that comes back normal, he will be sent to a speech therapist who will do their own evaluation along with a psychiatrist. They will do an evaluation of the child and will determine from there if your stepson has autism. Usually doctors don't like to diagnose children that age with autism unless it is an extreme case. Autism is usually diagnosed closer to the age of 5 rather than 3. They do this because they want to make sure that is what is going on. Go and look at the different signs of PDD and see if he might have closer symptoms to that rather than autism. Kids with PDD are more likely to handle things better than children with full blown autism.

As for your husband, my husband also had the same issues with our daughter. They don't want to believe it because it is their child. They don't want to have to think that something might be wrong with their baby, which is how my husband was acting. For now, I would just sit back and wait to see what his ex says the doctor tells her. What does she think about your theory?
