How do I find time for me?

I have three children with disabilities, and I am a single mom. I am just starting respite care and having trouble finding a worker! I have not had a real break in about 15 years!

I cannot imagine how difficult it must be for you, and I can only imagine how overwhelmed you must feel at times. Everyone needs to take some time for themselves, to relax and recharge, and in your situation I would say that it is even more important.

I agree with Sharlene. If you have family or friends that could give you hand, don't feel guilty about asking for some help. Even if it's something as simple as babysitting for a few hours while you go for a walk, or helping you out with meals and housework. Is your children's father involved in their lives? If so, ask him for help.

If you attend religious services, perhaps you could speak to someone at your place of worship. They might be aware of programs and services that might benefit you. Ask your family doctor too. Don't feel that you have to do it all on your own, help is almost always available when you ask.

If all else fails, and you can't get any outside help while you are waiting to find a respite worker, try to take little bits of time throughout the day to recharge. Five minutes here and there are certainly better than nothing.

I hope that everything works out for you. And I think you should be very proud of yourself for being strong enough to do what you do every day.
