How do I get my 3 year to sleep in his bed?

I have a 3 year old son who wakes up every night to walk through the dark to climb in between my husband and I. At first I allowed him to sleep with us because I used to breast and it was easier to have in the same bed. It's been over a year since I breastfed him but he will not stay in his bed. I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night to put him back in his bed, but its only a little while before he is back.

Talk to him about it, sort of a family meeting - say that you made a mistake and it is time for him to learn how to sleep in his own bed now because he is growing up. You could also say that all of you need to get a good nights sleep at night and you can only do this in your own beds. Mommy and Daddy in their bed and him in his bed. Get him a kids alarm clock which lights up or plays music at wake up time and tell him that he can get out of bed when the light comes on/music plays. Then come up with a couple of ideas 1- stay in bed when he wakes up at night, 2- stay in bed until the light comes on or anything else related to bed time that you want to work on - be sure to include something that he will attain easily. (create a sticker chart).

Every night before bed remind him of what the expectations are, review them in the morning and if he reached the goals then give him praise and a sticker (or check mark - anything to help him see that he is reaching the goal consistently). Be sure to stay consistent with your expectations and reviewing them every night and morning. Good Luck!
