How do I get my child to develop an interest for reading?

My son does not like reading and it has been a struggle getting him to practice. I am concerned that if he doesn't practice reading he will forget the little bit he has already learned. Any suggestions on how I can make reading more fun for him?

Boys usually like comic books. Find some that don't have too much adult content (violence, sex, etc.), and see if he likes reading those. They're usually pretty simple words and sentences, but it might at least get him interested in reading. Then you can slowly introduce other books more appropriate to his grade level.

Is it possible the texts he is reading is too hard for him? Maybe also try some that are easier for him. If they are too hard, he will avoid them.

Sorry about that, he is 6 and will be 7 next month. I will try your suggestion. With him starting second grade next month I am really concerned that if he does not begin to read more fluently he will fall behind.

You haven't said how old he is....but just sit and read together. Maybe try you reading one sentence, him reading the next. But make it something you are doing together.

Yes. That he enjoys! He just doesn't want to read himself. I have asked him to read to me but he won't.
