I would like to know this answer. My daughter is only 3. Though she has improved she still regresses. She would bite her nails so low sometimes they would bleed. She even tried her toes. (ughhh). I think the pain is making the biggest impression.

Be careful with the handsanitizers. I know the jury is still out about the alcohol making the children drunk. I know it is used in small amounts when you put it on, so in those small amounts unless you are putting in on multiple times during a 15-30 minute time I don't think your child will get drunk. But one important thing to remember is that we can over use these hansanitizers and the antibicrobial soaps. I know by now most if not all of you have heard about MRSA or the bad staph infections. When I was an infection control nurse, many moons ago, it was seen mostly just in Nursing homes and long term care facilities. But now it is a common home grown infection and it is bad news once you get it in your home. It is hard to get rid of and you can and most likely will have family members get it over and over repeatedly. What is happening is that this bacteria, MRSA, is developing a resistance to these products. These products no longer are able to kill these bacterias and will stay around no matter how much you use them. If you do happen to get it in your house you will need to do a very thourough cleaning of your house, clean all of your bed clothes, all of your families clothes all of towel etc. and if you can put a little bleach in the water that is all the better but use hot water if you can. And wipe down all of the surfaces in your home with a bleach solution. You should use a 1/10 strenght solution. One part clorox to 9 parts water. Or Clorox Cleanup is a good solution, it is premixed for you. But as for chewing nails my 11 y/o old does it and it is just out of habit. I did it and I think he will out grow it as I did. As for the child not liking to file his nails because he thinks it is uncool to have his nails filed and doesn't want his friends to know. 1) tell him file them at home and his friends will still think he bites his nails and 2) tell him there are alot of famous men in the world, ecspecially atheletes that go very often and have manicures because of how good they feel. I hope this helps you.

They make something called No Bite that's a clear, matte nail polish you can paint on their nails. It lasts a long time and take it from me (I've used it on myself) it tastes NASTY. Here's a link for ya:

Just FYI, hand sanitizer does not make kids drunk, unless they lick it while it's still wet which from what I have seen, most moms sit there and tell their kids to "dry dry" their hands as they wave them around in the air.
But what worked for me (and before I get emails from angry moms, I'll say I was desperate and I know it was wrong but hey, it worked) was that I kept telling my little boy to stop biting his nails or I was going to have to take him to his Dr. to see if she could help. Since I'm 37 and still bite my nails and have tried everything in the market since I was a kid (Sally Hansen Nail stuff for a nail biter like myself, taste good after a while) I really wanted to nip it in the butt before it got worse like mine. So, everyday I would tell him you need to stop or I'm going to take you to the Dr. to see what she recommends. Well, one day he bit so far that his nail bled and I told him that it could get infected and he would need to get a shot from the Dr. Well, it just so happened that he had his appt. for his scheduled shots in a couple of weeks and so as the days went on, I kept reminding him to stop or I would take him to the Dr. When his appt. finally arrived the Dr. asked me if I had any concerns and of course I said yes, he bites his nails. He gave me the "meanest" look any kid could ever give his mom but the Dr. approached him, told him that it was not good to bite nails and that he could get sick from germs. Well, soon after she left, in comes the nurse with shots and gives it to him and hey, the connections was made that if you bite your nails, you get a shot to keep you from biting your nails. He has had no problem since!!! I know, it was wrong to lie to him, well I didn't actually lie, I just didn't tell him the truth but it worked and thank goodness it did because once you get to be my age it's seems like there's nothing you can do. But do talk to your Dr. because mine did mention that a lot kids do it and there are mitts, I think she said, that they can "prescribe" to the child. Luckily, we didn't get to that point and let's hope he won't need therapy when he's in his 20's :) LOL
my mom use to use bitter apple on my sister....its usually used to stop dogs from eating garbage, but just a little bit on her nails stopped her from biting. she use to bite them so small, her fingers were always bleeding. i know they also sell a nail polish that has a cayanne (sp) pepper taste to it, but that might be a little much for someone so young.

your daughter looks like she might be old enough for polish...I put some pretty polish on my daughters toenails and told her if she could stop biting her nails we would do her fingers (probably helps that I do mine) and put flower decals on them, etc. I told her that we could not put polish on her fingers because nail polish is toxic (well, it IS) and gently reminded her when I caught her at it. As soon as the nails didn't look ragged anymore we did them with polish and everyone told her how fancy and grown up she looked...very positive!! She still nibbles once in a while, but never if they are painted!!

does she eat them? If so tell her she will get worms! If she calls your bluff then get some worms from yard or pet store (all ya need is one or two) slip into her bed after she gets up and alert her to what you found. Ask her if she had been chewing her nails. I would even pick up a pair of undies and pretend you found one in them. Yes..im mean but it worked for me!

That is an urban legend. Google "hand sanitizer causes drunkeness". They have to eat it before the alcohol evaporates to cause drunkeness. I doubt any of us would let a child eat that much of it.
FYI - lol germx sprayed on your hands (tiny little hand pumps that go in your purse) doesn't taste that bad if at all. We used a ton of it while at disneyland and after eating some cotton candy I forgot I had just used it and licked my fingers. No bad taste. Although, lol maybe the cotton candy masked it.

Yikes hand sanitizers have a dangerously high concentration of alcohol, just the small amount used on the hands can cause drunk behavior and make them quite ill. find the nail polish that is ment for nail biting I believe it is put out by Sally Hansen

My son sort of has the same issue he's 14 and like me, has weak nails. He doesn't chew on them but they get ragged and he uses his teeth to tear away the ragged layers.
Once I figured out how to file my nails I over came it. My son is afraid to use a nail file for looking girly!
It looks like she's holding up a pack of gum? That was my next suggestion - lots and lots of gum.
