How do I help my 9 year old son deal with is father’s death?

I’m lost, I don’t know how to deal with it myself. He was my ex-husband. I need some advice. He passed away last night and I don’t know how to deal with it myself. I’m lost, confused, lost for words. I don’t know what to feel, or how to react.

Oh Meri! I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It sounds like maybe you were still friends. Hugs.

The best advice I can give you about your son is to not shut him out or try to "shield" him. Help him face it and express himself. Along with the extreme sadness, death can be really scary for kids. Explain what you can in age-appropriate ways. Let him know you are there to talk, hug, or just be. Let him see it's OK to be sad. You may seek out a grief counselor that works with kids.

Later, help him make a memory journal. He can fill it with pictures and stories.

I just wish I could be more help. Hang in there friend.
