How do I tell my six year old he can't see his dad?

Normally my son goes to see his Dad for the Summer since he is in a different state. His dad has a meth addiction and was clean for three years but recently relapsed twice within a couple weeks. I don't feel like it's a good time to send my son down there this Summer but what do I tell him? I want something he will understand without explaining what's really going on. Help!

My father is a paranoid schizophrenic crackhead. After he and my mom split up when I was 8, we rarely saw him because he was busy doing ...other things. It was never sugar coated for us. I grew up knowing exactly why he was not always around and why his behavior was often different. I appreciated the honesty. That being said, I think that "daddy is too sick this summer" is fine. All kids are differen and respond differently to information. I hope your son has a great summer with you.

Why don't you want to tell him what's really going on? He's probably already learned a little about drugs in school. Don't give him all of the dirty details, just explain that his dad has an illness that causes him to take bad drugs. They make him too sick to take care of a little boy.

How about just explaining that his Dad is sick at the moment and can't look after him properly. If he needs a bit more tell him that Dad wouldn't be able to take him places and it's better for him to stay with you this time.
