How do I transition my son out of a day sleep?

My son has always had at least one day nap from the beginning but recently he's stopped having naps and just plays in his room (previously he would never get out of bed ) so I am wondering is it the right time to start giving up a few days of napping? He still gets quite wound up and teary if he doesn't have a sleep but I just can't get him to nap. Any suggestions and tips are welcome!!

My kids are nearly 6, 4, nearly 3 and 18 months. I require ALL of them to take a rest time every day (except my oldest, who is in kindergarten 3 days a week, but the days he is home, he rests.) I don't care if they watch a movie, or read a book, or do puzzles, but they have to be in their rooms and QUIET. I've rarely had a problem with them on this. Occasionally my 4 year old still falls asleep. I think it's an important time to have, for the kids' sakes and my own. I need that time to recharge and regroup.
