How do you discipline an angry child?

I am the mother of 3 children and a 20 year veteran teacher. My youngest child, who is 6, is having out of control tantrum of anger. Whenever he is "wronged" or gets mad at someone, he screams, calls names, and hits. When sent to his room or disciplined in any way, he slams doors, kicks walls, screams at us (the parents), and/or calls us names. I've tried several different approaches of discipline from Love and Logic to spanking to rewarding good behavior to ignoring bad behavior. If you have suggestions of what to do or any books to read to help with this, please let me know.

I think a therapist is a great idea! It may be that he just needs better coping mechanisms and ways to deal with his emotions. I would be wary, however, if the first suggestion from the therapist is any kind of medication. Meds should be a last resort, IMHO.

I feel for you -- that must be really stressful!!! It sounds like there's something deep-seated going on there that makes it difficult for him to process negative emotions. It sounds like you've been through the wringer with him.

I hate to be all "it's in his head!", but HAVE you considered talking to a child therapist? He might have Oppositional Defiant Disorder, or he might just be having a hard time dealing with setbacks. But I think it would be worthwhile having a good therapist talk with him to explore what he's feeling and to work with him to find more constructive ways of expressing negative emotions. Sometimes it's easier to listen to other adults than to listen to our own parents, right?

When my son was that age and went in to those outburts I would restrain him his back to my chest cross him arms and just hugged tight. and calmly tell him that once he was done he would be let go. I know how hard it is I hope you find something that helps you soon.
