How do you maintain your composure when an absent parent shows back up after 10 years?

While I can't help but think that this is a great opportunity for my son to get to know the father he has never met I can't seem to keep the anger and resentment that has been simmering for 10 years from boiling right out of my mouth.

What is the proper etiquette for such an uncomfortable situation?

Don't deny your hurt, anger, resentment, etc etc. nothing good ever comes from bottling our emotions up.

But make sure you direct it to the right place and not at your son. Don't bash his father to him or in his presence, let him come to his own conclusion.

Chances are, all that you are feeling your son is feeling, so keep the communication open with him and allow you and your son those feelings.
