How do you stop rough play and biting?

When my daughter went through the hitting phase we tried to ignore her. I taught my 6 year old (5 when she went through the phase) to say "oh don't hit, and then he would turn around and ignore her". It passed pretty quickly since she got absolutely no attention for the behavior. When she was rough with the dog, I had to keep a vigilant eye on her I always knew she was going to do something because she would get this look on her face. I would simply swoop her up and move her away from the dog, I would show her how to be nice but if she wasn't going to be I simply had the dog move away from her and that wasn't any fun either.
I can't really help with the biting the only time my daughter bit was when breastfeeding and I immediately stopped the feeding session so she learned very quickly if she wanted to eat she better not bite because I would put her down and walk away.
