How do you teach a 5 year old manners and respect?

My boyfriend and his 5 year old daughter recently moved in with me and she has little respect for anyone. She is demanding, rude and talks back. The adults in her life (outside of my boyfriend) let her do whatever and say whatever she wants up to this point. I was raised to respect the adults and people around me. Is it too late for her to change?

Like Dove said, she is only 5. She can still be taught manners and respect. The best way children learn is by modeling the behaviour to her. Make sure you and your boyfriend are using your manners and remind her when she fails to use hers. Don't respond in the positive UNLESS she is respectful and uses her manners (eg. if she doesn't say please, or she just demands, she doesn't get what she is asking for). There's plenty you can do at this stage to create the expectations in your home.

Of course it's not too late for her to change. She is only 5. It's going to require a lot of patience and consistency, but by modeling appropriate behaviors, giving a LOT of calm reminders, treating her w/ respect and manners (even when she is being disrespectful), and having firm consequences (given out calmly) for disrespect... she'll learn.
