How does Child Support work?

[deleted account] ( 3 moms have responded )

My sons father and I split when I found out I was pregnant. He chose not to be involved in our child's life. Basically he gave me the option to get an abortion or raise our child on my own. I chose to keep my baby and move back with my family to my hometown. He's never met our son and has never tried either. My sons birth certificate says the father is "Unknown". My son is now 8 months old. If I file for child support, how will it work out? I don't want to split custody or have my son travel out of state. If that's the case then I'd rather not file for child support and continue raising my son as I have with the help of my family. If he is obligated to file child support, what options does he have? What rights will he have?

There will be a paternity test. He HAS rights now... If he wants them and proves paternity. He doesn't have to pay child support to have a right to a relationship with his child. If you file for child support... he may or may not pursue his visitation rights (out of spite or a change of heart or...), but no one can predict what he will or will not do.

It all really depends on if he wants visitation. Beings that he has not seen the baby and split when you found out, he may have no interest. But then again if he has to pay child support, he may want visitation.

Thank you Dove. You are right about not being able to predict what he will or will not do, which is why I am so conflicted about whether or not I should pursue child support. I really have no intentions on doing it but I was just wondering. I figured it would be good to have an idea of my options as well. I'm most likely not going to go forward with child support, so until he feels ready to pursue his visitation rights I assume my son will not know his father personally.
